Dreaming of retiring to Spain but not sure where to base your search? Perhaps you will find your feet on the golden, warm sands of the Costa Cálida.

Alluringly named the “warm coast”, the Costa Cálida stretches for 250km and is located in the province of Murcia. It includes grand resort towns, such as those close to the marvellous Man Menor, as well as quieter spots with a more traditional feel, like Bolnuevo.

There are multiple reasons that the Costa Cálida makes for a marvellous retirement location, here, we’ve tried to pick just five.

1. It’s all in the name…the Costa Cálida really is warm

For those who want to catch some rays in their retirement, the Costa Cálida is perfect. Here, you will get twice the number of sunshine hours that you would in the UK: 3,000 a year. Summer is lengthy, spring and autumn are both pleasant. Even in the chilliest of months, the weather still reaches highs of 15°C.

The greatest thing about the weather is that it means you can enjoy all the brilliant activities that the Costa Cálida has to offer, for longer. Be that swimming, golfing or purely rocking in a hammock.

2. Beautiful Blue Flag beaches

To the beach!

Don’t have the patience for beaches that are a bit dirty and ugly? You’ll want to retire somewhere that has stunning, clean beaches as a standard. Wherever you choose to buy along the Costa Cálida, you’ll never be too far from one. Playa Levante is a great choice for when the grandkids come to visit. While Cabo de Palos Beach is perfect for discovering the marine life of your new home. For tranquility, head to Calarreona Beach, which is surrounded by cliffs.

To top it off, the Costa Cálida is home to the gorgeous Mar Menor, a saltwater lagoon.

3. Golfing galore

To the golf course!

Perhaps one of you wants to spend retirement reading brilliant book after brilliant book on the sand while the other wishes to be out on the golf course, if so, the Costa Cálida will suit you both.

The Costa Cálida is known for its golfing opportunities. Enjoy the 18-hole courses of La Torre Golf Resort, Mar Menor, La Serena Golf Resort and more. If you want to be able to roll out of bed and onto the golf course, there are fantastic properties available in new developments looking out onto the golf course.

4. Popping back home will be a breeze

Don’t want to miss a birthday? Fancy a chiller Christmas? Want to feel confident that you can get home in a jiffy if there’s an emergency?

For those that are anxious to retire abroad because they don’t want to miss out on life in their home country, that need not be too much of an issue on the Costa Cálida. Murcia International Airport is located 15.5 miles away from the city centre and has budget-friendly flights throughout the year. Plus, further away but well-facilitated with bus services and other transport links, is Alicante airport, one of the busiest airports in Spain.

5. Your choice of neighbourhoods

Once you’ve decided you’re keen on the Costa Cálida, the next question becomes, but where? Luckily, the Costa Cálida is home to beautiful and varied neighbourhoods, with property choices to suit a range of budgets.

Luxury property hunters might want to direct to the fishing village turned spa resort town, Los Alcázares. It lies right by the Mar Menor, has a gorgeous, bustling promenade, and a reputation for water sports. Plus, it is a super straightforward 30-minute drive from the airport. If you are keen to see your budget stretch as far as it can, then you might want to look a little inland, with the towns of Sucina and Balscias being popular choices.

With a budget of just €75,000, you can purchase a small apartment or a rundown home in the Costa Cálida. At the other end of the spectrum, you can purchase vast, incredible villas with panoramic sea views, a private infinity pool, a gym and more.
