A sense of community

If you’re moving to a French village and hoping to find a sense of community, you shouldn’t be disappointed. Most villages go to great lengths to involve their residents in a variety of events throughout the year. The local Mairie is the centre of village life and will often coordinate these activities.

Likewise, if you wish to organise an event yourself, the best way to do this would be to ask at the local Mairie. Or, to take this on regularly, you could join the Comité De Fete – the committee in charge of organising these events. The events can include anything from local brocantes (bric a brac markets), the village fête and annual community get-togethers which generally involve eating, drinking and merry camaraderie.

Communities, in particular, look out for people without support or family and are always ready and willing to help out.

Taking it slow

If you’re looking forward to enjoying a slower pace of life, then living in a French village will suit you perfectly. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you can take the time to enjoy the simple things, such as spending time with loved ones, embracing nature and eating good food. You’ll notice that the businesses in the area also take the same approach – life is not for working, it’s for living! So, don’t expect the shops to be open 24/7 – usually, they will close for lunch and also be closed on Sundays.

A busier summer

You may find that some villages are busier in the summer than they are in the winter. This is due to tourists visiting during the summer months and French people with second homes opting to spend the warmer months in the countryside. If you’re not a fan of empty streets during the winter, you may wish to opt for a village that has a population of mainly permanent residents.

An appreciation for nature

Taking life at a slower pace in the countryside will give you a newfound appreciation for nature. As well as this, properties with large gardens and land are very affordable in rural France, so it’s likely you’ll spend a lot of time outdoors. Many choose to grow their own produce in rural France and take part in outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and kayaking. Even in the winter, the fresh, clean air and clear skies will have you itching to venture outdoors.
