Puerto de Santiago, Tenerife

Before we head to the mainland, the Canary Islands are definitely worth a mention. Puerto de Santiago is a beautiful, peaceful and affordable fishing village in Tenerife, located on the western side of the island. Filled with charming whitewashed villas overlooking the sparkling sea, this pretty coastal spot is a great place to buy a holiday home or forever home. Average property prices are €2,287 per square metre.

Being further south than the Spanish mainland, the weather is warm pretty much all-year round. Even in December, the average daily maximum temperature is 24 degrees, and the average daily minimum is 17 degrees.

The atmosphere is more laid-back than other parts of the island with low-key bars and restaurants. If you’re looking for something a bit livelier, the vibrant resort of Playa de Las Americas is just half an hour away and has plenty of cocktail bars and nightclubs.

Mojácar, Almería

Another stunning whitewashed town is Mojácar on the Costa de Almería. It is traditionally Spanish, rich in history and considered one of the prettiest places in Spain. The town is perched on a hillside, sandwiched between the mountains of the Sierra Cabrera and the glistening waters of the Mediterranean.

Mojácar’s Moorish roots are still very much present today with an old Moorish fortress and numerous examples of Mudejar architecture. There is a quaint old town with narrow winding streets which invite leisurely strolls and a slower pace of life.

It is an ideal spot for winter sunshine with, some say, its own special microclimate. The population of nearly 7,000 enjoys 320 days of sunshine a year.

Average property prices are €1,830 per square metre.

Moraira, Alicante

Super accessible, upmarket and enjoying great weather, Moraira is another excellent option. Located just an hour from the well-served airport in Alicante and 100km from the gorgeous city of Valencia, Moraira would be a brilliant place to pop over to in order to escape the cold British winters.

The town clocks up 320 days of sun a year with average temperatures even in January reaching a pleasant 16 degrees (compared to 7 degrees in Manchester, for example).

If you like seafood, then you’re in luck: Moraira has one of the main fish markets on the Costa Blanca. There is also a sparkling marina and yacht club that offers sailing courses and holds regattas during the summer.

With eight kilometres of beaches, secluded coves and soft sand, Moraira is a great year-round destination. It is also remarkably green, with a mountainous backdrop covered in pine trees.

Property prices are more expensive than our other two choices, but you’re paying for the excellent location. The average home Moraira costs €3,453 per square metre.
