Laid back living

Faro is a fairly small city, with only just over 60,000 people. You will encounter some tourists, however, it’s mainly an authentic working, Portuguese city. Unlike some of the neighbouring resorts, it’s entirely set up for its permanent residents, with plenty of shops, restaurants and things to do.

It’s also a favourite spot for expats, so you’re likely to encounter lots of like-minded people there and English is widely spoken. With over 300 sunny days here per year, you’ll be pushed to find anywhere else in Europe with better weather.

Unlike some parts of the Algarve, being in a city means that you have excellent healthcare amenities on your doorstep, as well as schooling options nearby.

History and culture

Any lovers of history and culture won’t be disappointed with Faro. As a capital city, it has several museums, many churches, and the stunning Teatro Lethes theatre.

There is also an old town and a new town. The old town features cobbled streets, an attractive marina and plenty of restaurants. This is the centre of the city, so also includes local shops and markets.

Towards to outskirts of the city you will find the newer town, which includes a shopping mall, featuring a large supermarket, a cinema and plenty of shops and restaurants.

Excellent location

One of the best things about living in Faro is that it is excellently located. It goes without saying that the airport is nearby, just a 10-minute drive from the city centre, and also has a well-connected bus and rail service.

This is also a prime location for reaching the rest of the Algarve. You can reach island beaches by ferry from here and Praia de Faro is the nearest beach, a favourite with the locals and mostly overlooked by tourists. You get the best of both worlds here – a charming city with the beach on your doorstep.

Property prices

Unlike some other areas in the Algarve, property in Faro is fairly reasonable. Houses start at around €275,000, with older apartments in downtown Faro at around €135,000 and modern apartments from just €190,000.
