Are you looking for a slice of Italy that feels authentic? Are you seeking a coastal property?

Then maybe you should add Calabria to your list of locations to search for a property.

Where is Calabria?

Even a child could find Calabria, as it is the “toe” of Italy’s distinct boot shape. It is the southernmost part of Italy, along the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas. The area is made up of the provinces of Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio di Calabria and Vibo Valentia. Calabria possesses 500 miles of incredible coastline.

What makes Calabria distinct?

Calabria has an under-the-radar feel. While you can spot the more famous Sicily across the water, Calabria has not attracted the same level of international tourism. Therefore, Calabria offers you an Italy of yesteryear. Having said that, those who reside in the north of Italy flock down to Calabria every summer. So, by purchasing a home in Calabria, this is your chance to holiday like an Italian!

What can I expect from Calabria’s beaches?

Calabria’s beautiful beaches.

With 500 miles of coastline, you might find it hard to choose where to lay down your towel in Calabria. Tropea is a must-see beach, as it is surrounded by dramatic cliff faces that frame the beach perfectly. It boasts of fine white sand crystal-clear waters.

Meanwhile, Capo Vaticano is known for its rugged coastline and hidden coves.

If you are a snorkelling fan, you’ll enjoy Caminia Beach.

What is there to do other than laze on the beach?

Calabria is not as packed with things to see or do as Florence or Lucca. Goalkeeper! There are plenty of picturesque coastal towns with lots of intriguing local history to uncover. The coastal town of Tropea is a great place to mill about, ruminate over a book in a café, pick up bits and bobs and have an Italian feast in a lovely restaurant. If you like a little medieval vibe, head to the hilltop town of Gerace. The town Pizzo has its very own take on gelato, Tartufo, that makes the desert even more decadent and delicious.

What nature can I explore?

Calabria is home to two national parks — Aspromonte National Park and Sila National Park. Perfect for seeing alpine lakes, breathing in forest air, picnicking, and testing out your walking boots.

How do I get to Calabria?

The nearest airport to Calabria is Lamezia Terme Airport, it has domestic and international flights. However, it can be more complicated to get to in the off-season, so you may need to transition at a major airport, such as Milan.

What is the weather like?

With a home in Calabria, you will get to enjoy long, warm summers and short winters. It is warm from May to October, though the weather reaches its peak in July, with highs of 30 degrees. Remember your sun cream and take in that vitamin D!

How much will a property cost there?

One major plus of Calabria is that the cost of a home is much cheaper than that of the Amalfi Coast and other more well-known Italian seaside destinations. If you fancy pulling up your sleeves and embarking on a renovation project, then you can find a ruin or a land plot for under €50,000. Don’t fancy the work? No trouble. A small but looked after apartment can be secured for upwards of €80,000. If you’re in need of a bigger home, then you can get a four-bedroom villa for €200,000 or more.
