A touch more than an hour from Athens lies the Gulf of Corinth. It is home to all that we love about Greece from warm, long summers to ancient history to stunning beaches.

1.Nearness to Athens

The trouble with many of our favourite destinations in Greece is that they can be a little tricky to get to during the off-season. While flights flow from the islands to the rest of Europe during the summer, come November, your options are more limited. This can make getting to your Greek property a bit of an adventure: a flight to the mainland then a ferry to your property. But if, for example, you are based in the UK and intend to purchase a second home in Greece, then there is definitely something to be said for having a straightforward journey from one to the other. Alternatively, if you are moving to Greece full time, it might still be important to know that you can pop back home with ease when you need to.

Fortunately, the Gulf of Corinth does not have this issue. It is a little more than an hour’s drive from Athens International Airport. As the airport of the capital, Athens has a steady stream of international flights all year-round.

2. Wonderful weather

The Gulf of Corinth enjoys a temperate and mild climate. The warm season lasts from May to October. July is the hottest month with an average daily maximum temperature of 30°C and up to twelve hours of sunshine. Meanwhile, January is the coldest month with an average daily maximum of 10 degrees.

3. A famous canal

The Corinth Canal provides passage for ships through the isthmus of Corinth. While it is currently closed for restoration, it has taken 15,000 vessels before. Many people are taken aback by the sheer size of it as it is 80 metres in depth, 6.3 kilometres long and 23 metres wide.

4. Beautiful beaches

Enjoy lovely beach walks!

Without a doubt, we all adore Greece for its beaches and the Gulf of Corinth offers great ones. Corinth has organised around the beach of Kalamia, which is a mixture of sand and pebbles. It has great facilities like lifeguard supervision, lounging options, and cafes. If you are after pure sand, then head to Kantare beach, right before Lechaio village.

5. Ancient history

One of the other reasons that we love Greece is for its intriguing history. And the Gulf of Corinth, there’s plenty to see. About 5km away from the modern town is the archaeological site of Ancient Corinth. It is full of beautiful old ruins, the most well-known of which is the Temple of Apollo, which dates back to 540 BCE.

6. A modern town great for year-round living

Even if you are looking for a property that is a little out of the way of everything, it is still good to know that there’s a great, well-facilitated town nearby. Here, you will get your fresh fruit and vegetables from the market. You can check in with the doctor and the opticians. And, crucially, take a lovely long walk along the waterfront.

7. Characterful villages

If you like the sound of the Gulf of Corinth but would prefer the village life, then there are great spots nearby. About fifteen minutes away is a population of 3,500 in the seaside village of Vrachati. Meanwhile, five minutes inland (by car) is the larger village of Velo. Once home to the ancient city of Sicyon (there’s now as site and museum to visit) is the village of Kiato.
