Nice in France came third for quality-of-life last year in a report from InterNations. This year, it was ranked 13th in a list of the best cities for expats in the world. So, what makes this city such a great place to live? We take a look.

The weather

Nice has a pleasant Mediterranean climate with mild temperatures for most of the year. The hot summer days are tempered with a cool breeze and it remains warm into the evening. Sea temperatures are pleasant also, ranging from around 18-23 degrees. Best of all, Nice gets plenty of sun throughout the year, with around 14 hours a day in June and July.

Safety and healthcare

Nice is generally a very safe place with a low crime rate and residents claim to feel safe walking around at any time of day or night. It attracts a lot of female travellers for this reason. It’s an incredibly diverse city and the residents are said to be friendly and welcoming.

The healthcare in Nice is also of a high standard, even when compared to other French cities, offering good private and public options.

Transport links

Nice is located on the Mediterranean coast, which means great weather, great scenery and brilliant transport links. The airport has excellent international transport connections and it’s easy to get to the Alps, as well as luxury destinations such as Cannes and Monaco. The city itself has an excellent public transport system, with plenty of trams and buses operating at all times. You can also get direct ferries to a variety of locations such as Corsica and Bastia.

The scenery

With beautiful buildings, views of the Mediterranean coast and plenty of greenery, this is a stunning city. Stroll through the Old Town and up to Castle Hill for a brilliant view, meander along the Promenade des Anglais by the sea or take a walk around the historic Cimiez neighbourhood. The mixture of sunshine, sea and pretty architecture makes Nice a feast for the eyes.

The food and wine

To adopt a quintessentially French lifestyle and make the most of delicious food and wine, Nice is the place to be. Home to plenty of traditional French restaurants, Mediterranean influences also come into play to create a vibrant food scene.
