If you’re thinking of buying a holiday home in Portugal and wish to share it with your family, the Algarve is a brilliant choice. With plenty to do and see for all ages, you are sure to enjoy spending time with children or grandchildren here. We list just a few reasons why the Algarve is great for families.

1. Safe beaches

The Algarve has many beautiful, sandy beaches to enjoy. Boasting one of the largest concentrations of Blue Flag beaches in Europe, 87 of Portugal’s 360 Blue Flag beaches are in the Algarve. All are family friendly and most are easy to access. A great example is Meia Praia near Lagos, a brilliant beach with restaurants and an easy walk from various parking areas.

2. Plenty to do

One thing is certain – you won’t be bored in the Algarve! With plenty of places to spend a fun day out as a family, you’re simply spoilt for choice. Why not visit one of the Algarve’s brilliant waterparks, take a surf lesson or wander around a historic town, such as Faro, the Algarve’s capital? You could even indulge in a spot of mini golf or explore a national park – the possibilities are endless.

3. Embrace nature

The Algarve isn’t just for tourists who wish to laze by the pool all day. There are plenty of ways to explore the nature of this region. Whale and dolphin watching is extremely popular, especially with families. You could also visit Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve, a wetland home to an abundance of nature, including the world’s largest population of seahorses.

4. The weather

If you’re keen to use your holiday home in the autumn or spring as well as summer, the Algarve should still provide good weather. If you take a trip during the October half-term, for example, you could still enjoy temperatures of around 22 degrees and plenty of sunshine. In May, you’ll experience temperatures of 25 degrees upwards.

5. A range of properties

The Algarve offers a wealth of different properties at a range of prices. In the Western Algarve, townhouses are around €200,000-€350,000 and a budget of around €400,000-€500,000 would get you a resale villa with private pools near popular resorts. There are also many new developments in areas such as Lagos and Vilamoura, with spacious apartments at around €250,000, which would be ideal for a holiday home.
