Are you a hopeless romantic, who having already fallen head over heels in love with your perfect partner has developed a burning passion for all things Italy – the food, the language, the wine, the art, the cities, the people, the diverse landscape ? So much so that you both want to purchase a home there. Somewhere you can escape, to channel your inner Romeo and Juliet in the most romantic of surroundings.

But where are the most romantic destinations in a country where it feels like love is permanently in the air?

Rome

The Eternal city is the perfect place to celebrate your eternal love for one another. From watching the sunset behind the dome of St Peter’s and sharing an ice-cream at a pavement café to taking in the view of Rome on the Spanish steps and paddling you beloved about on the boating lake in Villa Borghese, this city is the personification of romance. Don’t forget to toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain with your right hand over your left shoulder, as legend has it this will ensure you will return to Rome in the future – hopefully with the keys to your very own home here.

Take the time to visit the district of Trastavere on your Roman viewing trip. Here you’ll find a funky, bohemian vibe, cobbled streets, candle lit trattorias and affordable property prices, by Rome’s standards.

If the city centre property prices are a little steep for your budget, the wider Lazio region offers romantic rural living, while still having the capital on your doorstep. Areas like lake Bracciano, Tivoli and Viterbo are particularly popular with oversea property buyers who want the best of both worlds.

Venice

Is there anything more romantic in the entire world than drifting down the canals of Venice under charming bridges in a gondola, surrounded by historic architecture that rises from the water? This floating city can legitimately claim to be the most romantic of them all. Throw in St Mark’s Square, candlelit meals in intimate restaurants, narrow lanes – of both the paved and watery variety – and dreamy lagoon-side sunsets and it’s easy to see why the city is brimming with loved up couples. Imagine being able to visit your pad here whenever you choose to soak up the city’s epic grandeur as you float down the Grand Canal.

Florence

Florence’s serene setting straddling the banks of the Arno River is just the start of this city’s romantic credentials. As the birthplace of the Renaissance, between the 14th-17th centuries, Florence’s wealthy patrons created a city overflowing with architectural masterpieces. Having indulged in a sunset kiss at the Piazzale Michelangelo, overlooking the historic cityscape, it’s time to indulge in the local cuisine. Italy is a nation obsessed with fine food and Florence is right up there with the likes of Bologna when it comes to being crowned the culinary capital. From simple yet delicious street food from the Loggia del Porcellino to Michelin-star restaurants with sweeping city views, if the way to your heart is through your stomach, this is the place for you.

Verona

The setting for the most famous love story of them all is home to enchanting hills, narrow passageways, quaint squares and a sumptuous castle. Hopefully you’ll have a happier ending than Romeo and Juliet, as you explore the Arena di Verona, Piazza delle Erbe and Castel San Pietro. Summer visits to your very own Casa di Giulietta – Juliet’s house in Shakespeare’s play – could be spent attending the city’s annual summer opera festival, held in the remarkably well-preserved 1st-century amphitheatre. This historic splendour led UNESCO to name it a World Heritage Site, but it’s the city’s enduring association with matters of the heart that attracts visitors from around the world.
