Offering all the benefits of the Costa del Sol but at a fraction of the cost, Costa de Almería might be just what you’ve been searching for. So, what makes ‘Spain’s best kept secret’ so great? Let’s explore this region further…

Year-round sunshine

Almería may not have the name ‘sunshine coast’ but it certainly gives the Costa del Sol a run for its money when it comes to warmth and sun. In fact, Almería is one of the hottest and driest places in Europe, enjoying 320 days of sun a year. The city of Almería is also the only city in Europe to have a ‘desert’ climate.

Temperatures regularly go above 30ºC in the summer and it is not uncommon to see temperatures in the late teens in the winter.

Affordable property

Almería is one of the cheapest parts of Spain to buy property so is great for people with a smaller budget or those looking to get more for their money.

For just €35,000 you can find some lovely small townhouses and apartments. If you’d prefer a villa, a two/three-bedroom villa with a private swimming pool and garden could be yours for around €150,000.

It should be noted, however, that although prices are cheaper, they don’t tend to appreciate in the same way that properties would in the Costa del Sol or Costa Blanca. So, this area would better suit those looking for that perfect holiday home, rather than an investment property.

Traditional towns and villages

Another draw of Almería is that it has retained much of its authentic Spanish charm. You’ll find fewer high-rise developments and more unspoilt towns and villages. Here are three of our favourite locations in Almería.

Mojácar

Mojácar offers overseas buyers the option of both traditional or more modern properties. The white-washed old town still feels very Spanish and boasts wonderful sea views. If you’d rather be more in the action, Mojácar Playa is right on the beach and has a great choice of bars and restaurants.

Garrucha

This fantastic beach town, famous for its delicious and locally caught red prawns, is lively with lots to do and see. With a long stretch of sand, attractive promenade and glistening blue water, the area would make for a great summer holiday. The beach in Garrucha is also less busy than nearby Mojácar Playa.

Properties here tend to be apartments and would be perfect for a ‘lock up and leave’ style home.

Lubrín

This classic pueblo blanco village in the countryside is truly beautiful and the homes there are very affordable – starting from around €50,000.

A walk down the narrow, winding streets will take you past numerous tapas bars and restaurants. Although the area is very Spanish, you’ll still find a good amount of British families if you’re looking to chat to fellow expats.
