Piedmont is located in the northwest of Italy. Its landscape is made up of green valleys, mountain ranges and vineyards. Its capital, Turin, is a cool destination and attracts those looking for an alternative to the likes of Milan and Rome.

Cuisine: If your favourite tipple is a red wine, you’ll be pleased in Piedmont, for it is home to the Barolo, known as the “King of Wines and Wines of Kings” for its richness and full-bodied flavour, the Barbaresco, is also popular and has a more refined, elegant taste. In terms of food, Piedmont is famous for its pork, lentils and white truffle pasta. Italy is Europe’s largest producer of rice, and more than half of it is grown in Piedmont, so expect plenty of delicious risotto.

Liguria

 

Close by, you’ll find Liguria, a coastal region in northwest Italy. It is home to Cinque Terre, a collection of famously beautiful small seaside towns connected by a scenic walking trail.

Cuisine: Liguria’s basil leaves are small and delicate, making for a distinct but delicious taste to its famous Pesto Genovese. Enjoy it in Trofie al Pesto, a pasta dish. Plus, as Liguria sits on the sea, you can anticipate delicious seafood.

Venice has multiple features to boast about. It’s a UNSECO World Heritage site, its home to a host of galleries and museums, the Venice Film Festival and is ideal for those seeking car-free living.

Cuisine: If you’re a fan of Spanish tapas, you’ll like cicchetti, small plates of finger foods that you’ll nibble with a glass of wine or Spritz. Plus, given that it is built on water, you can expect the best seafood. Due to its history, some Venetian dishes have a Middle Eastern feel.

With the jaw-dropping Dolomites as its backdrop, Trento Alto Adige is known for its spectacular scenery and skiing. It is located in the northeast of the country.

Lombardy

A large region, Lombardy encompasses the chic city of Milan and the splendid Lake Como.
