Heraklion

As the largest region in Crete, Heraklion is full of history and is extremely beautiful. For those who wish to rent out their property to tourists at certain times of the year, this would certainly be a good location to choose.

Heraklion Town is Crete’s capital and has architecture that hails back to the Arabs, Venetians and Ottomans. There is a wealth of things to see and do here, including museums, historical sights, nightlife and events all year round. Much of the city centre is now pedestrianised, meaning that it is now easy to walk around and take in the sights.

There are also some beautiful beaches in Heraklion including the bohemian Matala beach, Agia Pelagia and Malia.

If you are looking to buy a property here, there is a huge range for a variety of budgets. You can find 2-bedroom detached properties for under €150,000 and larger houses for over €200,000.

Lassithi

In contrast to Heraklion, Lassithi is the perfect place to escape the tourist trail. For untouched landscapes, beautiful beaches and traditional towns and villages, look no further.

You’ll find the largest beach on the island here – Mirabello Bay – as well as the famous Finikodassos beach. The towns and villages here are mainly inhabited by friendly locals and are extremely beautiful. Some highlights are Agios Nikolaos, the capital of the region, the coastal town of Elounda and the mountainous village of Kritsa.

This area is popular with the rich and famous. However, homes in the region can be incredibly cheap; there are village houses in need of renovation for as little as €20,000. Villas with swimming pools tend to start at around €300,000.

Chania

For beautiful forests, mountainous landscapes and pretty buildings, Chania is the place to be. With a pretty old town that hosts a traditional market selling fresh produce, narrow cobbled streets and an old Venetian harbour, you can get a taste of authentic Crete here.

Despite being quaint and traditional, Chania has a buzzing atmosphere and vibrant nightlife. It’s also great for those who enjoy walking and hiking. The Samaria Gorge, a vast national park with lots of walking trails, is perfect for those who love the great outdoors.

You can find three-bedroom detached villas with private pools in Chania from around €150,000, but if you are willing to do some renovation, there are properties on the market for as little as €50,000.
