Lying west of mainland Greece, the Ionian islands are an enticing option for international buyers. There are seven main ones: Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaka, Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Kythria.
From the mid 14th to the late 18th century, the Ionian islands were under Venetian rule. Today, the legacy of this is felt through the architecture with mansions, fortresses and most famously, Corfu’s Old Town, a UNSECO World Heritage site.
From each Ionian island, you can expect a Mediterranean climate, characterised by hot, sunny summers and mild, rainy winters. Rainfall is common in winter, which has blessed the islands with lush green landscapes. The more southern the island, the less rainfall. If coats and wellies are not your thing, you may want to look to Kythria.
Corfu
Although it is not a large island, just 20 miles at its widest and 40 miles long, Corfu has a huge reputation for attracting expats to its sunny shores. Most significantly, the British Durrell family in the 1930s. More recently, it was a used as a filming location for the television show Mamma Mia! I have a dream. Corfu is ideal for those seeking days of harbourside walks, cycling, sailing, golfing, and of course, swimming. From healthcare to international schools, it has good facilities for locals and international buyers alike.
