The largest covered market in southern Portugal
Loulé is home to the vibrant Mercado Municipal de Loulé, the largest covered market in the south of Portugal. The Arabic-style market is the focal point of the town and includes a mixture of colourful indoor and outdoor stalls selling a wonderful selection of fresh produce and locally made items.
Just outside the market are several streets brimming with shops, cafes and restaurants, along with gorgeous architecture to admire.

Charming Moorish architecture
Loulé was an important Moorish city between the 8th and 12th century and reminders of this influence are still very much present today in the architecture. Some of the most beautiful remnants of this time include the castle, the church of St Clemente and the Islamic baths, which have only recently been discovered.
The town also boasts quaint cobbled streets that wind together in a maze-like fashion, before opening out onto vast squares.
Property in the area is reasonably priced. You can find small key-ready apartments or houses in need of renovation from around €160,000. Larger apartments start from around €200,000 while villas and townhouses would need a budget of €250,000-€300,000.
