When you picture your dream Italian home, what does it look like? For many, the dream is to unwind in the countryside. To enjoy a book from a sun-kissed garden, stroll through cypress trees, and drink wine and feast on olives from the local vineyard or grove. If that sounds idyllic, a home in Siena could you suit you superbly.
Siena: the basics
Siena is the second largest province in Tuscany. But it is sparsely populated with 265,000 permanent residents. So, you get the perfect balance of space and not too many people to enjoy it.
As a result, Siena is very rural and a great choice for city-based professionals looking for a farmhouse or villa where they can escape the stresses and strains of the modern world.
The nearest airport to Siena is located in Florence, Aeroporto di Firenze Amerigo Vespucci. It is about 75 minutes in the car. Although longer journeys, you may find better flights by travelling to Perugia airport in Umbria, Fiumicino airport near Rome or Pisa airport.
Art & culture
For days when you want to do more than enjoy a leisurely olive grove stroll, you’ll be spoiled for choice by the museums and galleries. The city of Siena is a Tuscan “City of Art” and is listed by UNSECO. It is also famous for hosting the Palio horse race.
The historic centre is enclosed by a seven-kilometre wall. Inside, you’ll find carefully preserved Gothic architecture, dating back to the 12th century.
The older parts of the city are pedestrianised, which makes for a more enjoyable experience. While the newer parts are great for evenings and nights out with a choice of bars and restaurants.
