The Costa Blanca is a beautiful coastal region in southeast Spain. With over 200 kilometres of gorgeous beaches and exciting towns and cities, it can be hard to narrow down your search. Today, we suggest two great areas to buy property within the southern part of the coast, which extends from Alicante to the border with Murcia.

The Orihuela Costa is a popular coastal region in the province of Alicante, in the autonomous region of Valencia. It lies close to the border with Murcia and consists of several connecting resorts and urbanisations.
The area has grown in popularity in the last decade and during the summer months is a haven for sun seekers, particularly from the UK. There is a brilliant selection of amenities, bars and restaurants, however, many of these do tend to shut down in the winter months when the tourists leave.
As such, most international buyers in the Orihuela Costa opt for a holiday home or short-term rental investment to make the most of the summer trade. That’s not to say there aren’t permanent residents, however.
With the beaches being the main attraction in the area, for optimal investment potential, look for properties as near to the coast as possible. You can go about 5km inland, but anymore than that and you risk losing potential rental trade. Nonetheless, if you just plan on using the property yourself, you might not mind being slightly further from the sea – and the prices will be much cheaper!
The area offers plenty of apartments, townhouses and villas for buyers with all budgets. As mentioned, the further from the coast you go the cheaper the properties.
Some popular urbanisations on the coast include: Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia and Cabo Roig. If you would prefer to buy more inland, look at Los Balcones, La Florida, Los Dolses and Villamartin.

The area of Vega Baja is another great place to buy property along the Costa Blanca South. It is popular with all nationalities, particularly those looking for permanent residence or to invest in long-term rentals/residencial tourism.
The area is full of natural beauty and would suit active expats. You’ll find sand dunes backed by pine forests, colourful salt lakes and a vast river lined with plenty of nature trails. One of the best is a five-hour walk, known as Caledra del Gigante (or giant cauldron in English), which starts at Algorfa and takes you through the beautiful orange groves and lush countryside along the river, ending in Benejuzar. The area is rich in flora and fauna too, so keep an eye out for rabbits, foxes, squirrels, lizards and the majestic European eagle owl.
There is also an abundance of golf courses in the area. Some of the best are La Finca Golf, Vistabella Golf and La Marquesa Golf.
Many of the international residents live around 5-10km inland from the popular coastal town of Guardamar del Segura. With most living there permanently, the area tends to feel ‘open’ and thriving all-year round with plenty of bars, restaurants and cafes bustling with life even in the winter.
Properties in the area consist mainly of apartments, townhouses and villas with a lot of new build development currently taking place. Unlike the Orihuela Costa, the Vega Baja area has not been developed specifically for tourism and all the developments over the last 50 years have been built around existing Spanish towns.
Some popular towns and urbanisations in Vega Baja include: Guardamar del Segura, Rojales – Quesada, Benijofar – Benimar, Los Montesinos, Formentera del Segura, Algorfa – La Finca and Daya Nueva / Daya Vieja.
