We could go on and on about why the Algarve in Portugal is such a fantastic location for property buyers. With around 3000 hours of sunshine a year and property that cater for all budgets, it’s no surprise that the number of expats setting up home there rises every year. But what would your lifestyle be like if you lived there?

World-class golf

If golf is your thing, then few places will serve your needs better than the Algarve. The region boasts over 40 world-class golf courses that cater for just about every skill level. They are all relatively close together, meaning you can easily spend your days trying your hand at all the different courses.

Some popular courses include the Boavista Golf and Spa resort on the edge of Lagos and the Penina Hotel & Golf Resort, near Portimão.

Plenty of opportunity for activities

For energetic expats, the Algarve is ideal. The year-round sunshine means that there’s never really a time you can’t enjoy the great outdoors.

If surfing is your thing – or you think it could be – the Algarve is one of the best places to ride the waves. Anyone will tell you that the best place to surf in Portugal is Sagres, an attractive bohemian town situated in the far-right corner of the country.

And if you’d rather stay dry, there is plenty of opportunity for hiking, boating, fishing and cycling. The towns of Cabanas de Tavira and Burgau are great places to enjoy these activities.

Beautiful beaches to explore

Another thing the Algarve is famous for is its golden sandy beaches. Sheltered by soaring cliffs, there’s a real mixture to explore. For sunbathers there are plenty of beaches with calm waves lapping at the shore. However, there are also many wild and unspoilt beaches, particularly if you head west of Praia da Luz.

Delicious food to try

And we can’t forget about the food! We hope you like fish because the Portuguese certainly do. In fact, they are one of the biggest consumers of seafood in the world. As well as fish, the Portuguese diet also includes a lot of fruit and vegetables.

A life in the Algarve would almost definitely involve dining alfresco in the Portuguese sun. Make sure you try Cataplana de marisco – a delicious seafood and meat dish that originates in the Algarve.
