You may be planning to move abroad or buy a holiday home in 2021. If you’re thinking of buying a property in France, you can certainly get more for your money than you would back home. But where are the cheapest places to buy? We take you through some great areas that are brilliant places to live with very reasonable price tags.

Saint Quentin

Saint Quentin is a beautiful town boasting a range of architecture and influences. With a stunning town hall, Gothic basilica and a Flemish-inspired central square, it is popular with tourists. The best part of moving to Saint-Quentin, however, is possibly its location. It’s just a two-hour drive away from Paris and a two-and-a-half-hour drive away from Brussels. The town also has a main railway station with connections to take you all over France.

Ouest-Creuse

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine of France is an area which is hugely popular with British buyers and can be pretty expensive. However, you could say that Ouest-Creuse is the hidden gem of the region. With landscape resembling the Dordogne, many impressionist painters have been inspired by the beauty of the place, with its green valleys and rivers. It’s the perfect place for lovers of the outdoors and is only an hour’s drive from the Parc Naturel de la Brenne, which has over 2,000 lakes and ponds.

Median property price: €630/m²

Niort

Niort sits in France’s Deux-Sèvres Department and is a hub for financial services – so may not seem like a very interesting place to move to, at a glance. However, if you take a closer look, Niort has lots to offer, from a pleasant historic centre to the medieval fort of the old quarter. The market hall hosts a market every morning from Tuesday to Sunday, as well as a big market on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Le Bassin de Joinville en Champagne

For those looking for rural tranquillity, Le Bassin de Joinville en Champagne offers just that. You’ll enjoy wandering through the narrow alleys of the Old Town and its medieval houses nestled against the hill of the old feudal castle. The Wood of Joinville is perfect for taking in the landscape and strolling through the surrounding countryside. Its natural beauty means that the likes of Voltaire, the Goncourt brothers and Charles de Gaulle have called Le Bassin de Joinville en Champagne home.

Median property price: €680/m²
