Over the past 18 months, remote working has become the norm for many of us. But could you work remotely from the French countryside? Here are a few things to consider.
Is your property well connected?
After months of searching, you may find your dream property only to discover that it has poor internet connection and Wi-Fi can’t be installed. Ensure that you do your research on the property and the area before viewing it. Ask your agent, find out what the previous owners used, speak to others in the area and double check!
Navigating WiFi installation
Thankfully, many of the telecom providers in France have English speaking helplines, which should make the process of installing WiFi a little easier for you. Make sure to check which suppliers provide the best connection in your area and speak to the locals about it. It’s also worth remembering that there will be a period of time between moving in and getting your WiFi installed, so, to ensure you are prepared for this, you may need a dongle or a decent data package.
Last year, the French government promised to eradicate all internet ‘dead spots’, which will provide even the most rural areas with internet connection. A surge in people moving out of the cities and into the countryside due to the pandemic has strengthened the case for this and the government continues to work with telecom providers on this matter.
Many users in rural France are still reliant on ADSL connections, meaning a fixed phone line is needed for the internet. However, rural areas are gradually hearing that the fibre network is slowly but surely coming to the French countryside. For any news regarding this or other connectivity plans and improvements, your Mairie is the best place to ask within your area.
