When you move to France from overseas, it’s important to consider how you might settle in and get to know your neighbours, the locals and generally make friends. Here are some top tips that will help.

Get involved in the community

If you’re moving to a town or a village, there tends to be a real sense of community, particularly in rural France. Your first port of call should be your local Mairie, which will have plenty of information on how you can get involved in community activities. You’ll meet all of the key figures in town or village life, which will be extremely useful if you need any advice on the local area.

Join local clubs or societies

Joining clubs and societies will help you to meet people who have similar interests to you – and you may well be surprised how many English folk you meet along the way. Again, your local Mairie is probably a good place to start, or failing that, Google! Continuing hobbies that you had back at home will also help you feel more settled and comfortable in France.

Invite your neighbours over for an “apero” when you move in

Many people say that their neighbours have been a godsend when they move to France, eager to help show them around their new neighbourhood. So, make it a priority to invite them over and make a connection! Doing it sooner rather than later will definitely pay off in the long run. Plus, nothing will make you feel more at home than feeling surrounded by friends.

Use social media to connect with fellow expats

In this day and age, social media can be extremely useful if you want to connect with people who have shared experiences. Join a Facebook group for British expats in France and ask questions about moving to France, compare notes and soak in the advice. You’ll be surprised at how many people are asking the same questions as you!

Take French classes

You’ll not only pick up an extremely useful skill at French classes, but you’ll also meet people who are in the same boat as you! French classes will also open a door to getting to know more French people. Learning just a few key words and phrases is a great starting point, and practice as often as you can!
